The Black American West Museum is a hidden gem and is museum to ‘telling the history of how it was’ during the pioneer era. The museum is based in the home of the late Dr. Justina Ford, the first licensed black female physician in the state of Colorado, who attended the delivery of more than 7,000 babies of more than 37 different nationalities or ethnic groups. The museum also has displays of the states first black cowboys. The museum is a community center and excellent opportunity to teach children about things that are not necessarily in history books. Even though the museum does not allow photographs and digital recordings, the highlights of the museum include the knowledgeable staff and the close proximity between guests and artifacts. The museum is only open on Friday and Saturday, so it’s best to make a day-trip and visit surrounding museums.
