Fort Ward is considered D.C.’s best preserved Civil War fort. It is located in a park inside a residential neighborhood. The fort was used to protect the Capitol from attack and possessed a total of 36 guns mounted on five bastions. Additionally, the fort had a bomb shelter to protect 500 men.
The beat way to get to the fort is by car. Each year, the city hosts re-enactments, artillery demonstrations, and torchlight tours.
