Del Rio is a border town, where you can take advantage and enjoy a unique blend of American and Mexican culture, fascinating art displayed in various murals. The city is located within a mile of the Rio Grande and the Mexican town of Ciudad Acuña, just 150 miles west of San Antonio. Additionally, due its size, hotels are limited, but it does make a great 2-3 day trip.
The city can trace its history back to the 17th century, but it was not a permanent settlement until he 19th century, when it’s lifeline was established from San Felipe Creek. The creek provided ample water for farms, orchards, and vineyards due to its many springs. Today, the creek provides pristine water for swimming and cooling off in the 110° heat during the summer.
Del Rio is just a few miles from the Amistad National Recreation Area which includes Lake Amistad, i.e., the home to some of the best bass fishing in Texas. Additionally, Lake Amistad is a veritable playground for those who enjoy swimming, kayaking, boating, or even scuba diving. The rugged limestone canyons and arid plains that surround the lake provide a gorgeous backdrop and ample territory for hiking enthusiasts.
Shopping extravaganza experience is limited, tthe friendly and family atmosphere is great. While in the city, you will meet some of the most friendliest of people, tour the Dinosaur Exhibit, Whitehead Memorial Museum, the Brinkley House who inserted goat glands into males, houses dating back to the 1890s created my Italian Masonry’s and Texas’ oldest winery, i.e., Val Verde Winery.
