Located just 45 minutes from Montgomery, the Fungi Farm in Dadeville is a pioneer in Alabama’s mushroom scene. Founded by Allen Carroll, an Auburn-educated soil scientist turned mycology entrepreneur, it specializes in producing spawn, ready-to-fruit substrate blocks, and mushroom growing kits. What began as Allen’s fascination with mushrooms quickly evolved into a full-fledged laboratory operation, now supporting fungal hobbyists and small-scale farmers across the Southeast .
They offer onsite workshops, forays, and tours…plus a cultural library of over 90 gourmet mushroom varieties (think lion’s mane, reishi, chestnut, shiitake). Allen’s team makes everything from sawdust “logs” to ready-fruit bags, allowing mushrooms to flourish in just 1–3 weeks after setup. Checkout my homegrown block…
After visiting the laboratory at the Fungi Farm, you will workup a appetite and should visit Twice Baked. Since opening in 2018, owner Joseph Shorter has poured his passion—without ever attending culinary school—into crafting fresh, scratch-made dishes that bring joy to the Lake Martin community. Twice Baked isn’t just about great food—it’s about connection. Joseph also runs a cleaning service for elderly residents in the area, and the team is known for their heartfelt service, warm smiles, and neighborhood pride…Everything’s homemade, from bread and biscuits to scratch meals—because Joseph believes cooking is “a blessing…a gift from God”.
