Tono is the gateway for journey’s and provides an accessible dip into agricultural life. The town is known for its infamous folklore, the basis for so many spooky stories about ghosts, demons, monsters and spirits. One of the most widely known folk creatures of the region is the kappa, a mystical water sprite that resembles a small, humanoid turtle and is believed to lurk around rivers, lakes and ponds. Kappa serve as a reminder of the dangers of water, as they are said to be fond of eating children and cucumbers, but are also beloved, and statues and images of them can be found all around Tono.
The sights are spread out, so it is best to travel by renting a bicycle. While cycling, you will have an opportunity to see some fantastic riverside trails. The mythical world is well signposted in English, but don’t hesitate to go down some unmarked roads.
