Hakodate, Hokkaido

Hakodate is considered the southern gateway to the island of Hokkaido. Foreigners established communities as Hokodate is considered to be one of the first ports to open up to international trade. The highlights of Hakodate can be easily seen in a day as there are all time-specific, i.e. start in the morning seafood market, then stroll the attractive flagstone lanes of the Motomachi district, then head up to Hakodate-mama for the famous view over the bay. There are multiple methods to get to Hokodate, but the most convenient way is utilizing the Tsugara Kaikyo Ferry from Oma to Hakodate on the Shimokita Peninsula (1.5 hour ride). If you have a “Y-plated” vehicle, you can buy your tickets at the terminal.

While in the city, ensure you bring a light jacket or umbrella as the wind routinely sweeps across the ocean into the city. Also, bring some comfortable walking shoes as there isn’t really a need to drive as most things are centrally located and some pretty steep slopes leading into neighborhoods. Parking in the city is reasonable and depending on the day of your travel, the streets are packed with vehicles/tourists. As you head out to view the sites, purchase combination tickets which will give you access to the Old British Consulate, Old Public Hall of Hokadate Ward, Hokodate Museum of Northern Peoples, and Hokodate Museum of Literature.
